Do you feel like so much demands your attention that stillness has become a forgotten skill? We are more connected than ever and yet, increasingly disconnected from ourselves. Constant digital stimulation places our nervous systems in a perpetual state of alert, affecting our sleep, focus and emotional regulation.

At Oxford Healthcare Retreat in Johannesburg, we believe that true wellness begins when we disconnect from external noise and reconnect with the rhythms of the body. Our digital detox retreats are designed to support this process through science-backed therapies that calm, restore and rebalance the nervous system.

The Cost of Constant Connectivity

The human nervous system wasn’t designed for 24-hour connectivity. The endless cycle of alerts and multitasking keeps the body’s stress response activated, releasing cortisol and adrenaline, hormones meant for short bursts of action, not sustained states of stress. Over time, this leads to nervous system dysregulation, resulting in fatigue, anxiety, poor concentration, and even physical symptoms such as muscle tension or digestive issues.

According to Dr. Stephen Porges, founder of the Polyvagal Theory, chronic stress keeps the nervous system “locked in survival mode.” He explains that “safety and connection are biological imperatives; when we don’t feel safe, the body cannot heal.”

A digital detox helps the body restore this sense of safety by creating space for presence, silence and deep rest, all of which are essential for recovery.

What Happens During a Digital Detox Retreat

At Oxford Healthcare Retreat, guests are encouraged to embrace simplicity, disconnecting from devices, social media and constant communication. There are no televisions in our suites and we recommend limited screen use throughout your stay to allow for mental and emotional recalibration.

The retreat’s floatation therapy, massages, reiki, reflexology, yoga and mindfulness sessions work together to soothe the body’s stress responses. The magnesium sulphate–enriched floatation pool in particular has been found to reduce cortisol levels and induce a meditative state, making it ideal for those who struggle to “switch off.”

Understanding Nervous System Healing

When the body is chronically stressed, the nervous system struggles to return to equilibrium. This is where practices such as somatic exercise, TRE (Tension and Trauma Release Exercises) and breathwork become powerful tools for recovery.

Liz Tenuto, known as The Workout Witch, describes somatic work as “helping the body speak the language of safety again.” Through gentle movement, shaking and breath, these techniques discharge built-up tension and signal the brain that it is safe to relax.

Our holistic therapies and guided sessions at Oxford Healthcare Retreat draw inspiration from both Eastern philosophy and Western science, addressing wellness from the inside out. Whether through meditation in our gardens, reiki, or reflexology, each experience supports the natural rhythm of restoration.

Relearning Stillness

Stillness doesn’t mean doing nothing — it means allowing the mind and body to synchronise in the present moment. During your stay, you might start the morning with yoga in the garden, enjoy a nutrient-rich breakfast from our kitchen, take a reflective walk or simply rest under the trees.

Each moment spent without digital distraction allows your nervous system to shift from “fight or flight” into “rest and digest”, a state essential for healing, clarity and emotional balance.

The Science of Reconnection

Research published in Psychology Today and Frontiers in Human Neuroscience has shown that digital detoxing improves mood, cognitive flexibility and overall wellbeing. Even a short break from screens can recalibrate dopamine and serotonin levels, neurochemicals vital for emotional stability and motivation.

By providing a peaceful environment free from overstimulation, Oxford Healthcare Retreat offers a space where the nervous system can naturally return to regulation. As one guest recently shared:

“Friendly staff and a beautiful environment. A wonderful selection of therapies on offer and a great variety of relaxing activities. I’d definitely recommend a stay!”

Return to Balance

At the heart of every Oxford experience lies one intention: to help you remember what it feels like to be present, grounded, and whole. By stepping away from the digital world, you step back into yourself, where clarity, calm and creativity naturally flourish.
