As we welcome November, we’re thrilled about an exciting new addition to our therapeutic offerings at Oxford Healthcare Retreat. Read on to learn more about how this powerful new therapy can support your journey to holistic health.

This month, our focus turns to the transformative work of somatic trauma healing—a therapy that dives deep into the body’s memory and its connection to emotional well-being. We’ll also explore the fascinating role of the vagus nerve, often referred to as the body’s “reset” button, which plays a critical role in regulating our stress responses and promoting healing from within. With the end-of-year rush just around the corner, now is the perfect time to take a step back, prioritise some restorative downtime, and prepare yourself both physically and mentally for the busy season ahead.
“Physical fitness is the first requisite of happiness.”
— Joseph Pilates
We are delighted to announce the addition of Reformer Pilates sessions to our wellness offerings, thanks to an exciting new partnership with the renowned Ikigai Reformer Pilates Studio.

Shaakira Nanabhay, the founder of Ikigai Reformer Pilates is a highly qualified Pilates Instructor who holds a BCom in Sports Management, an Exercise Science Certificate, Group Yoga Instructor Certificate and Pilates Mat and Reformer Certifications from renowned institutions.
With over 20 years of experience, Shaakira has learnt that exercise is not simply a tool to help clients lose weight, gain muscle or achieve the dream of completing a big race, but rather a means for individuals to focus on their mental wellbeing, happiness and ultimately the best tool to help them find balance and truly achieve their greatest potential.

Pilates is an excellent low-impact exercise that strengthens and tones the body, improves flexibility, and enhances core stability—all essential for holistic wellness and physical resilience. With this collaboration, we are now able to offer various weekly sessions designed for both groups and individuals, allowing you to personalise your practice. We’re thrilled to work with the expert team at Ikigai to bring this dynamic, restorative exercise to our Retreat experience. Please email info@ikigaipilates.co.za for further info.
Somatic trauma healing focuses on addressing and releasing trauma stored within the body, recognising that our experiences, especially traumatic ones, can be physically held in our muscles, tissues, and nervous system. At Oxford Healthcare Retreat, we offer a range of therapies to help individuals safely process and heal from these deep-seated experiences.
Each of these practices involves engaging the body in ways that promote relaxation, release tension and support the healing of trauma held in the body.
  • Massage Therapy: Massage works directly on muscles and tissues to relieve physical tension, encourage relaxation, and release stress stored within the body. This can help the nervous system reset and release held patterns associated with trauma.
  • Yoga: Yoga combines mindful movement, breathing, and gentle stretching, allowing individuals to reconnect with their bodies, process emotions and calm the mind. Many yoga practices are designed to activate the parasympathetic nervous system (the "rest and digest" system) and stimulate the vagus nerve, supporting trauma recovery.
  • Floatation Therapy: Also known as sensory deprivation therapy, floatation therapy provides a deeply relaxing environment that can calm the nervous system and create a sense of safety. The zero-gravity experience can relieve physical stress and help release muscular tension associated with trauma.
Our approaches also include breath-work and guided mindfulness, each designed to gently reconnect you to your body and release emotional blockages. A key aspect of our treatment is the activation and support of the vagus nerve, often called the "relaxation nerve," which plays a crucial role in regulating the body's stress responses. By targeting the vagus nerve, our therapies help calm the nervous system, reduce anxiety and restore a sense of safety and grounding, empowering you to move through life with renewed resilience and ease.
We encourage you to consider your own opportunity for transformation this November with us at Oxford Healthcare Retreat🌿
